This room is called the Shield Room due to a public art event entitled An Old Fashioned Celebration of America. In celebration of the 230th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we asked seven local artists to paint shields depicting a significant event for each decade since the signing of the Declaration. As you stroll through the room 23 shields adorn the walls beginning with a painting of our forefathers signing the Declaration and ending with the heart-wrenching painting of New York firemen raising an American flag out of the rubble of the 9/11 attack. In between those you see Lewis and Clark cross the continent, Lindbergh fly across the Atlantic, Rosie the Riveter going to work to build another Liberty Ship and many more scenes from our past. It is a way to experience America, and our history, in a way you have never done before.
